Diagnostic Membranes and Arrays
Rapid diagnostic tests are sustaining a rapid growth as they become a major segment in the Point of Care IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic) world market. Two formats using microporous membranes are the most common in IVD devices: The Lateral flow strip and the immunoblot strip. Though, due to its simplicity, the lateral flow format is from far the most popular. Sartorius has developed special nitrocellulose membranes which are today a reference for consistency in IVD strips or new protein arrays.
Membranes for Lateral Flow Tests
UniSart® nitrocellulose membranes have been designed to be the ideal solid phase for Lateral Flow, able to bind high amount of capture reagent and yield a controlled and fast wicking of samples. Developed in the mid–80 for pregnancy testing, more than a billion Lateral Flow Immunoassays are today produced per year. Many markers such as cardiac, cancer, drug abuse and more can be analysed on such a strip. Like an ELISA it uses the powerful antibody/antigen reaction but in a one-step format.

Protein microarrays (or biochips) are indispensable tools for many proteomic applications and new multi-parameter IVD tests.
